Historical Research, Historical Writing

This module will equip you with the methodological and analytical skills to carry out high-level research and writing - vital when undertaking your dissertation.

The module comprises four blocks of teaching:

  • In ‘Sources’ you’ll learn how historians across the department go about the business of locating, reading and deploying sources for a wide range of research projects.
  • ‘Practices’ will be taught through a series of masterclasses on research, including workshops on the craft of writing.
  • In ‘Methods’ you will choose from a variety of small-group training options (e.g. quantitative data analysis, palaeography, map analysis or geographic information systems, visual sources).
  • In 'Theories’ you will learn how different historical and multidisciplinary approaches can be applied to specific case studies.
