Approaches to Cinema History

Module code: HA7201

This module will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to research methodologies in film. We will consider the historiography of Film Studies, aesthetic and social film histories and demonstrate how to analyse non-filmic primary sources (e.g. scripts, trade papers, press books), and quantitative and qualitative evidence of reception. The module will be taught through key secondary texts (e.g. Cahiers du Cinema on Young Mr Lincoln) but will allow you to follow your own particular interests. You will also be expected to make use of the British Film Institute Library in London to gain experience of using non-filmic primary sources.
