Researching World Cinemas

Module code: HA2330 (double module)

This is a survey course intended to introduce students to the range and diversity of film styles and practices across the world. It will provide a more holistic picture of the variety of film production in different countries and cultures than the incomplete vision of film history restricted to the West. We will examine films from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

We will consider film both as an art form and as a social practice, we will also examine how different modes of film practice can be understood as the products of historically and culturally specific conditions of production, and we will explore the different aesthetic practices and critical assumptions that have informed film-making in various cultures.

This is a double weighted module. Extended seminars, and an additional research assignment will allow you to study the films and topics covered in HA2030 in greater depth.
