Critical GIS

Module code: GY7703

This module takes an intellectual and critical focus to GIS, and seeks to unpack a range of contemporary issues encountered when applying spatial technologies. These broad themes include cartographic communication (traditional, web, mobile and VR), uncertainty of information, participation, privacy and philosophy. We will consider also contemporary debates within the ‘digital turn’ such as the dark web, ‘smart’ cities, the Internet of things and augmented reality. The module is taught as a mixture of lectures and seminars. The seminars will involve student presentations and consideration of various case studies. Please note that this is not a 'technical' GIS course and it is not aimed at developing skills using GIS software.
