Concepts in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy with Applications to Reservoir Geoscience

Module code: GL3104

In your second year, you would have learned about different depositional environments. In this module, you'll develop this further to understand how depositional systems are controlled by external factors such as climate and sea level change, and how changes over time affect the sedimentary deposit.

New research is always being published in this subject area. This module will be tied closely to current discussions and new understandings in sedimentology, investigating current research questions.

You unravelled a sedimentary succession as part of your group work in GL2105 and in this module, you'll learn techniques to interpret more complex examples using stratigraphic techniques such as sequence stratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy, and biostratigraphy. You'll then apply this to the subsurface, in order to understand hydrocarbon reservoirs and the implications for our development of alternative energy sources.

Topics covered

  • Critical evaluation of modern sedimentary systems
  • Current challenges in fluvial sedimentology
  • Controls on shallow marine siliciclastic and carbonate deposition
  • Deep marine processes and sub-environments
  • Application of seismic, sequence and chronostratigraphic, and biostratigraphic concepts to appraise and analyse data
  • Controls on hydrocarbons formation, accumulation and distribution
  • Quantifying hydrocarbons in place; subsidence analysis; hydrocarbon maturation and migration
  • Geological and sedimentological controls on reservoir quality
