Analytical Chemistry in Practice

Module code: CH2206

During your first year, you would have been introduced to analytical chemistry, which studies and uses instruments and methods to analyse the separation, identification and quantification of chemical compounds. This module will delve deeper into analytical chemistry, and you'll look at its practical applications.

Topics covered

  • The errors associated with analytical measurements and sampling methods and how they can be minimised and evaluated
  • The key components of analytical instrumentation and their functions
  • The principles of a variety of spectrochemical methods, their use in chemical and biochemical analysis, and how to select the most appropriate method to solve specific analytical and bioanalytical problems
  • The principles of chromatography, electrophoresis and mass spectrometry and how these techniques can be used in bioanalysis
  • The structure and biological function of DNA and RNA and how methods to analyse DNA are important in analytical chemistry and forensic science
  • Evaluating and interpreting results from qualitative and quantitative analyses
  • Solving problems involving analytical data in a critical manner assessing the significance and reliability of measurements
