GIS in Archaeology

Many new technologies are being used in the field of Archaeology, and this module will enable you to explore the practical skills and theoretical debates surrounding one of the most important – GIS.

You’ll formulate a detailed conceptual understanding of what GIS is, and the principles underling its application. Throughout the module you’ll develop a thorough understanding of how GIS has been integrated into Archaeology by evaluating published case-studies, practical discussions and theoretical debates that use or advocate the use of GIS.

This module will also involve using GIS, and you’ll develop a good level of practical competence in the application of it, by exploring primary sources and archaeological data. This module aims to:

  • Provide a thorough grounding in the theoretical concepts underlying the application of GIS
  • Provide a solid grounding in the practical application of GIS
  • Explore the ways in which GIS is being applied by archaeologists
  • Examine critically developing trends in the application of GIS within the discipline.
