The City

Module code: AM2211 (double module)

The history of the United States is deeply entwined with the development of the city. Since the late 19th century, the rapid expansion of urban living has been closely associated with American national identity. Urbanisation has brought many benefits but also many challenges, and this module will examine a number of those issues through a focus on very different types of cities from across the United States.

This interdisciplinary module aims to show how a variety of disciplinary approaches – politics, history, literature and film – can be used to illuminate one issue central to the study of the United States. The module seeks to help you engage with the subject in a genuinely interdisciplinary way and to express that engagement in both visual and written form.
