EL7500 Academic English for Postgraduate Law Students

This course is for non-native international postgraduate students in the School of Law.

This course has 2 modules. Each module is 8 weeks. You can choose to study one or both modules.

Module 1

These sessions aim to develop the necessary skills for efficient and effective academic reading, participation in seminars and writing assignments.

Module content

  • analyse essay titles
  • look at written genres and organisation
  • develop your legal and general academic vocabulary
  • read and write complex sentences
  • discuss key ideas and texts
  • proofread your work
  • improve your pronunciation and presentation skills
  • access independent study resources

Module 2 will focus on assignment feedback and the language and skills required for the dissertation.

  • work on your dissertation proposal (title, focus, structure, language)
  • look at genres and organisation associated with the dissertation
