EL7300 Academic English for MA TESOL and MA Applied Linguistics & TESOL Students

This course is for non-native international postgraduate students from MA TESOL and MA Applied Linguistics & TESOL

This course has 2 modules. Each module is 8 weeks. You can choose to study one or both modules

Module 1

Duration 8 weeks

Module Content

  • Discuss, read and write about issues related to TESOL and Applied Linguistics 
  • Develop strategies to help you with your academic reading
  • Identify the author’s opinion in texts related to your discipline
  • Use evaluative language to express your opinion of sources
  • Expand your knowledge of discipline specific and general academic vocabulary
  • Write definitions and classifications of TESOL and Applied Linguistics terminology
  • Summarise, paraphrase and link different sources
  • Write problem-solution paragraphs
  • Learn and apply the key stages of a good introduction and conclusion to your writing
  • Revise complex grammatical structures commonly used in academic writing
  • Plan and develop ideas for assignments on your course
  • Understand and respond to your tutor’s feedback on your formative assignment

Module Content

  • Write in an appropriate style for different types of assignments on your academic course

  • Identify authoritative sources

  • Organise your argument in a logical way (assignment writing)

  • Engage with arguments related to your academic subject and critically evaluate them
  • Develop ideas for your research project (dissertation/professional enquiry)
  • Narrow the focus of your research
  • Develop the title of your research project
  • Write your research project proposal
  • Collect data by asking effective questions and managing interviews
  • Deal with challenging questions about your research
