Profile

This is my first teaching post as a lecturer in Midwifery, which I have been undertaking part-time while studying for my PhD full time at the University of Leicester. I have a healthcare career spanning over thirty-five years within the NHS. I have worked as a healthcare assistant, a ward clerk, an internal auditor, an adult nurse in Neuro-intensive care, Haematology, and Palliative care. For over twenty years I have worked as a Midwife (with a brief spell as an Interim Equality Lead). I am passionate about the delivery of safe, compassionate family-centred care, and am equally committed to improving the staff experience of delivering intelligent healthcare.

Research

I was awarded a National PhD Fellowship in 2019 researching 'The role of visual management tools for the coordination of teams in healthcare' sponsored by The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute (THIS), which is directed by Professor Mary Dixon-Woods. THIS is supported by The Health Foundation.  I am  supervised jointly by Professor Nicola Mackintosh in Social Science Applied to Healthcare and Improvement research (SAPPHIRE), and Professor Nicola Bateman, Associate Dean  Internationalisation and Professor of Operations Management at the University of Leicester School of Business (ULSB). My PhD title is 'Visual Management Tools (VMTs) for escalation of care in Maternity Services #Whatdoesgoodlooklike?' I am researching the staff experience of asking for help in maternity services during transitions to digital ways of working through the visual management tools of early warning scores, sepsis tools and SBAR tools.
