Introductory Statistics

Module code: MA1202

This module will cover some of the fundamental ideas of mathematical statistics. We will study how to estimate parameters of a population using a sample from that population, what can be said about those estimates and how to use the concept of maximum likelihood to find suitable estimators. We will look at how to test a statistical hypothesis, how to judge if an effect is statistically significant, and how to tell if data fits a given distribution or not. This module will examine at how to construct confidence intervals for population parameters and what they mean.
