As the 21st century continues to unfold, the role of Human Resources Management (HRM) within an organisation has never been more important. HRM is becoming a critical success factor for organisations' effectiveness.

However, we live in an ever-changing world. External issues (such as new technologies, changes in the sociological and economic climate and new employment laws, amongst others) can affect business and corporate strategy, impacting the deployment and implementation of HR policies and practices.

Fundamental to the above changes are issues related to globalisation, diversification, national culture and national industrial relations. These factors affect the efficacy of strategies, and hence, can pose a serious challenge for managers who typically focus on organisational goals and effectiveness. Thus, focusing on human resource management within an organisation can provide one of the keys to success. In this module, we will address the emerging complexity of these often competing and contrasting perspectives. You'll explore past and present thinking on management in relation to the current national and European issues in human resource management.

You'll define Human Resource Management and its role in the strategy and performance of an organisation. You'll look at its part in the organisational culture of a business, and how it deals with employment relations. You'll also apply your skills to practical case-studies in key topics such as people resourcing, equality and diversity, zero-hour contracts, social networking and performance management.
