Landscapes and Identities in Medieval and Early Modern England

This module enables you to read landscapes and explore how landscapes shaped the experiences of the peoples of medieval and early modern England, and the impact of those peoples on the landscape. This ‘Leicester approach’ to local history has been a hallmark of the Centre since its foundation in 1948. The early modern component of the module builds upon the coming together of social and political history, another development in which local studies have been at the forefront. Themes include agrarian and settlement history, religion in the landscape, the politics of the parish, community, neighbourliness and local allegiance during the English Revolution. The second half of each session develops strategies for reading and critiquing the primary sources upon which these historical debates have been based.
