Charles Dickens was one of the Victorian period’s most popular and influential authors, who found success as a serial novelist, short story writer, and journalist. Dickens was renowned for his grotesque and comic characters; his vivid portrayals of London life; and his profound exploration of some of the most pressing issues of his age. This module enables close study of a variety of Dickens’s work across different forms and genres, interspersing examination of key novels with consideration of his shorter fiction and essays. The module will allow you to consider:
