Course description

With the Leicester Global MBA you learn from a pioneer in global executive education with a strong international reputation. When it launched in 1989, the Leicester Global MBA was one of the first AMBA accredited distance learning MBA programmes in the world. Today, over 12,000 Leicester Global MBA alumni worldwide are a testament to our expertise and experience in helping professionals succeed and being a student with us gives you access to this network of international business leaders.

With the Leicester Global MBA you can study fully online and benefit from face-to-face learning to suit your needs.  Our online learning environment lets you study anytime, anywhere and includes lectures, live seminars and workshops, interaction with tutors and fellow students and online study guides.  Each year you can attend our annual Leicester Masterclass that takes place at Brookfield, our new £16 million pound School of Business campus.

All teaching is delivered by School of Business academic staff who combine teaching with research and bring the latest knowledge and skills to their teaching.  You'll study in small groups with extensive opportunities for teamwork allowing you to build your professional networks with fellow students and tutors.

When you take the Leicester Global MBA you'll have the opportunity to specialise your degree, tailoring the course to meet your needs.  You have the choice of studying for a general MBA or following one of our three specialist routes:

  • Finance
  • Human Resource Management
  • Marketing

The Leicester Global MBA programme offers a great return on investment because you can continue to work while you are gaining a valuable qualification. By studying whilst you work, you, your team, and your company immediately benefit from your newly gained knowledge and skills.   You'll also benefit from the opportunity to undertake assignments and the MBA Project on topics relevant to your work and professional career aspirations.

In addition to being an AMBA-accredited MBA programme, the Leicester Global MBA enables you to gain a professional qualification from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).  Subject to successful completion and moderation you will be awarded a Level 7 Certificate or Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice, as well as being awarded Foundation Chartered Manager status. The Level 7 qualification has been developed for Directors and Senior Managers who have the responsibility to translate organisational strategy into effective performance.

We are also accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and offer exemptions on eight of our modules (subject to satisfactory completion).  If you chose our MBA Marketing specialist route you will also have the opportunity to gain module exemptions on professional qualifications through the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

To learn more about the programme and our online learning environment look though our Leicester Global MBA platform.

We also offer a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration if you want to keep you study options open and aren't able to commit to the full Leicester Global MBA programme.

Our course holds exemption accreditation with CIMA on eight of our modules.

CIMA is the professional body of management accountants. Exemptions are subject to satisfactory completion of the selected modules.

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)

CIM's qualifications are based on detailed research and ongoing employer feedback, sharing the skills and knowledge required for today's marketers.  This helps our students to advance into practitioners, stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of securing their first-choice graduate position.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught by academics who have international research and teaching expertise, as well as practical experience in their respective fields. You will also have an academic personal tutor who will provide support and guidance to enable you to make the most of your studies.

Our programme gives you the flexibility to fit your studies around your professional and personal commitments, while ensuring that you meet the learning and progression requirements.

The Leicester Global MBA has five modules, each taking 6 months and each week you will have either a two-hour recorded lecture or participate in a one-hour live online seminar.  These will be further supported by our online study guide, additional learning materials, and online forum discussions with your tutors and peers. Online teaching takes place via our Leicester learning environment, which also houses your learning materials. Live seminars are undertaken in small study groups and scheduled so that they are convenient for different time zones.

During each module you will have the opportunity to participate in a weekend-long residential workshop, held in February and August. Once a year you will also have the opportunity to attend a Leicester Masterclass, held at the University of Leicester in mid/late August/early September.  The residential workshops and Leicester Masterclass form a valuable part of your learning and allow you to benefit from face-to-face interaction and networking with your tutors and fellow students.  Currently both the residential workshops and Leicester Masterclass are being offered online only.

Your three core modules are assessed by both a mid-term online open-book examination and an individual assignment, submitted at the end of your module. Your option module is assessed by an individual assignment and a group assignment.  Your final module is your MBA Project which will help you improve your career prospects by allowing you to conduct a live consultancy-style study in your own organisation, undertake market research for your next start-up, or explore in-depth a business or management topic of interest.

Distance Learning

Online learning is an important feature of this course, therefore it is essential that you have reliable, regular access to the internet (preferably with a broadband connection) in order to participate.

As a distance learning student, you will have access to the University Library's electronic service, the Leicester Digital Library, which includes a large number of e-journals and e-books.

If you live close to Leicester you can, of course, visit the Library in person. For UK-based students who wish to use other libraries, we can issue you with a card which allows you to do so. This is a national scheme which allows distance learning students to borrow material from up to three other participating libraries.
