Room bookings

Guided tours

Guided tours are available to visiting groups by prior arrangement, and can be tailored to suit your needs e.g. outside the normal opening hours. On arrival, visiting groups are divided into smaller parties of about ten people each. A trained volunteer will accompany each party around the Garden or Arboretum. A tour typically takes about 1.5 hours and can be combined with light refreshments at the end, if so wished.

Taking a tour ensures that you won't miss anything: all the highlights and many interesting, hidden details are included. The Botanic Garden tours focus on the history and development of the garden, especially the restored Edwardian garden, the houses and landscape features of particular interest.

Throughout the tours, noteworthy plants are pointed out, together with information about their scientific and horticultural significance. Tours can be tailor-made to suit your group's particular interest if required.

What there is to see

The 16-acre Botanic Garden is one of the most diverse in the region, and includes:

  • arboretum
  • herb garden
  • woodland and herbaceous borders
  • rock gardens
  • water garden
  • parterre garden
  • glasshouses: alpine, desert, Mediterranean and tropical
  • special collections of hardy fuchsia, conifers, peonies

Costs

The tour costs £5 per person and also includes a colour guide. There is a minimum charge of £50, but we can cater for any number.

Tea and cake are available before 6.30pm at an additional £4 per person.

Revenue from the tours goes to support the Botanic Garden's education programme, which hosts upwards of 11,000 school children every year.

Wedding photographs

You are most welcome to take wedding or engagement photographs in the Botanic Garden during opening hours, but it is essential that you book in advance. A charge is payable per session.

Please note that the arrangement relates solely to photography. We regret that we do not allow drinks, picnics, confetti or music in the garden on these occasions. Please also note that the use of drones above the garden is not permitted.
