The Victorian Art World: People, Movements and Museums

This module will allow you to explore the fascinating and complex world of Victorian visual art. You will explore some of the most important paintings of the period and the people and ideas behind them. You will learn about the importance of art to Victorian society and how art was used as a platform for both radical and conservative social agendas. You will explore the creation of the great Victorian museums and galleries and there will be opportunities to visit Victorian collections. You also have the chance to examine specific movements in Victorian art, from Romanticism and Classicism to Impressionism and Aestheticism. We will work with visual material and key art historical texts in class and you will be expected to draw upon both visual and textual material in your final essay assignment of 2,500 words.
