Introduction to the History of Art 1: Antiquity to Baroque

This module surveys the history of art from classical antiquity to the Dutch Golden Age. Across this module, we will investigate why this 'canon' of great works and great artists (whether one accepts it or not) came to be. The history of western art, as we shall see, is not an immutable narrative handed down to art historians, but one developed, challenged and changed by us, a set of sometimes competing histories which we may use or criticise as we investigate our materials.
