Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG)

Evaluating Creativity

RCMG was commissioned by engage (The National Association for Gallery Education) to evaluate its two-year encompass programme, ten projects linking schools and galleries across England. Funded by Arts Council England through its A4E programme, the projects targeted two audience groups; primary school children and their families, and 16-18 year olds.

Aims and objectives

The aim was to increase the participation of these audience groups in the arts through collaboration between art galleries, practising artists and a range of other organisations including schools, youth centres and community groups.

Key findings

Evaluating Creativity set out to analyse the aims and objectives of the programme, using 10 local evaluators working within a framework devised by RCMG. The quantity, quality and depth of the evidence produced enabled the encompass programme to act as a resource for future planning and provided material relevant to the advocacy of gallery education.
