Overview

Graduate Teaching Assistantships allow research students to fund their PhD through part-time teaching work with the University.

A Graduate Teaching Assistant is responsible to the Head of School and is expected to undertake teaching or other duties within the School - not normally exceeding 8-10 contact hours per week - while undertaking research leading to a PhD.

Approximately 81.3% of their time will be spent on their doctoral research and 18.7% on their GTA responsibilities. Training is provided to help Graduate Teaching Assistants develop their teaching related skills and enhance their professional competencies. (GTA job summary (docx. 100kb).

Applicants must have contacted potential supervisors prior to submission of their application and also provide the following with their online application:

  1. Personal statement (Maximum 2 pages describing academic background, previous research experiences, and motivation to pursue their chosen project)
  2. Teaching statement (maximum 500 words summarising the teaching experience and an overview of the modules that you can support)

The 4 year GTA funded studentships provide:

  • A combined teaching and stipend payment, currently £19,237 per year for 2024/25
  • Tuition fees at UK rates

*International students are welcome to apply but must be able to demonstrate that they can fund the difference between UK and International fees for the duration of their study. The difference in fees payable by the student will be £18,864 (2024/25) per year of study.

Applicants are required to hold/or expect to obtain a UK Bachelor Degree 2:1 or better in a relevant subject. A Master’s degree is preferred. Experience with research or teaching would be a plus.

Include with your application:

  • CV
  • Personal statement (Maximum 2 pages describing academic background, previous research experiences, and motivation to pursue their chosen project)
  • Degree certificates and transcripts and details of any study currently in progress
  • Evidence of English language proficiency (if applicable)
  • In the reference section please enter the contact details of your two academic referees in the boxes provided or upload letters of reference if already available
  • In the 'fees and funding' section please specify Maths GTA
  • In the supervisor section please provide the name of the supervisor and project title you want to be considered for. If you want to apply for more than one project please list them in order of preference
