Radiative Processes

Module code: PA4604

This module builds on the classical and quantum physics studied in previous years to introduce the most important physical processes that generate electromagnetic radiation, and the processes that modify the emergent spectrum such as scattering and absorption. The topics covered in this module are fundamental to our interpretation of astrophysical data.

Topics covered

  • Radiation from moving charges
  • Continuum processes: blackbody, bremsstrahlung, cyclotron, synchrotron
  • Radiative transfer: absorption, scattering effects
  • Application to astrophysical sources and plasmas
