Computational Fluid Dynamics

Module code: EG7125

This module will provide a comprehensive overview of Computational Fluid Dynamics, and its application to flows of both academic and industrial interest. Alongside learning about the theoretical and numerical techniques used in CFD, you will also have the opportunity to perform CFD simulations using both the Ansys FLUENT CFD package, and the OpenFOAM toolbox. This combined approach to learning Computational Fluid Dynamics will provide you with the ability to use CFD to solve engineering problems in a wide variety of situations.

Topics covered

  • Governing equations of fluid dynamics
  • Turbulence and its modelling
  • Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations, and turbulence models
  • Large Eddy Simulation and subgrid-scale models
  • Direct Numerical Simulation
  • Boundary conditions
  • Density-based solvers, and pressure-based solvers
  • Code parallelisation and High Performance Computing
