Molecular Cell Biology

Module code: BS2092

‘Molecular cell biology’ is centred on the principal techniques used in molecular cell biology and allows you to develop your ability to design experiments to test a hypothesis, based on the use of these techniques. This module will provide an overview of cell ultrastructure, with a focus on the cytoskeleton and organelles involved in synthesis and trafficking of intracellular and secreted proteins. By providing a thorough outline of cell signalling pathways, with a focus on the molecular features of receptors, signal transducers and second messengers, you will develop your understanding of the principles of cell cycle control in eukaryotes.

Alongside lectures, small group teachings and practical sessions will be used to reinforce and supplement your learning and designed to illustrate some of the key methods in cell biology. A major aim of these activities will be to provide you with the knowledge and experience of these key molecular cell biology techniques and how they can be applied to address a specific research question.
