Seven thousand Leicester students to celebrate summer graduations

The celebrations are the University of Leicester's first summer graduations to be held in person since 2019.

Students who “triumphed over adversity” will celebrate their achievements at the University of Leicester’s first summer graduations for three years over the next two weeks.

Almost 7,000 students from 117 different countries will collect undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD honours from Thursday, across 18 ceremonies in the coming days.

The celebrations, centred on De Montfort Hall and the neighbouring University campus, recognise the achievements of the Class of 2022 as well as students who completed their studies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing the graduates alongside their friends and families, Professor Nishan Canagarajah, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, said: “Today is a day of celebration – both of our students and their achievements.

“The graduates we recognise at these ceremonies in 2022 have persevered through unprecedented times and shown true courage, adaptability, and resilience. They have triumphed over adversity.

“We are hugely proud of what our graduates have achieved just in getting to this point, and look forward to supporting them further as they expand our powerful network of changemakers across the globe.”

Almost 7,000 students from 117 different countries will graduate across 18 ceremonies at De Montfort Hall.

The celebrations – which follow a small number of in-person ceremonies in January – also mark a major milestone in the University’s Centenary year.

Dr Suzie Imber, Pro-Chancellor (Students), said: “I would like to extend a huge congratulations to all those graduating. This day is a celebration of years of hard work, and also an opportunity to thank all those who helped you on your journey.

“As you embark on a new chapter of your lives, I would like to encourage you to never stop learning and exploring, taking with you the memories of your time here, and the friendships you have made.”

Also among the awards to be conferred this summer are nine honorary graduates from the worlds of research, business, and entertainment. For more information on the University of Leicester graduation celebrations, visit le.ac.uk/graduation.
