Prisons in a pandemic - new funding to examine impact on prisoner well-being and mental health

Covid has impacted on all areas of society, and prisons are no exception. To minimise the risk of Covid-19 outbreaks in prison, Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) has implemented a range of measures, including suspending face-to-face visits by friends and family, cancelling or curtailing rehabilitative, leisure and work activities for residents, and significantly increasing the time residents spend locked in their cell. Such measures have the potential to significantly impact the physical health and well-being of residents, as well as staff.

This project (funded by the Economic and Social Research Council) investigates the impact of these restrictions on residents of the offender personality disorder pathway and examines the effectiveness of Covid restrictions in prison.
