Our award winning Students’ Union is the social hub of the campus, both during the day and after the sun goes down.
Between lectures you can pick up a coffee at our very own Starbucks and then drink it with your friends on the sofas in the Square. This is your living room on campus, the spacious central meeting area of the Percy Gee Building. While you’re there, why not stock up on stationary in the Point or organise your finances with the help of advisers in the onsite Santander bank.
In the evening head back to the Union to see top acts in the O2 Academy or join your friends for one of our legendary club nights – Let’s Disko and Shabang!
The Courteeners, Steel Panther and, of course, local heroes Kasabian are among the bands that have brought the house down on the main O2 Academy Leicester; the world class music venue located within our Students’ Union building. As well as the main stage, there are also two smaller venues which play host to local and up and coming bands. Students are able to get priority tickets for many O2 Academy events.
If that wasn’t enough, you can also see hot new acts in session in the Square organised by our student radio society, LUSH. This is a fantastic opportunity to catch new bands before they make it big.
Joining societies is a great way of meeting like-minded people, having fun and trying something new. Leicester has nearly 200 different societies, covering everything from Dodgeball to Knitting, Burlesque to Real Ale, Curry to Quidditch! We also have societies based around academic subjects, national and cultural identities, student media, fundraising, politics, sport and music. Whatever your interests there’s a society for you. If after all that you still can’t find a society that matches your interests, we’ll give you all the help you need to start one.
Of course, every society needs people to run it and this can be a great way to gain organisational experience and it will look impressive on your CV.
Another thing that will boost your CV is work experience. The bars and the shops in the Union are staffed by students, giving you plenty of opportunities to develop the skills to be a stand out choice for future employers.
We're here to provide information and support on housing, money, safety and education. The Education Unit is one of the main and most crucial services that the Students’ Union provides for students. The aim of the unit is to offer free and impartial advice on all academic issues. If you’re not coping with your studies for whatever reason, come and talk to us. We offer a completely confidential, free and impartial service to all students. We also run Nightline; a student-run listening, support and information service which is open 8pm-8am every night during term time. Our specially trained volunteers are keen to offer students a safe space to talk about their thoughts, feelings or anything that's troubling them.
