Alumni
Frequently Asked Questions
We get a lot of questions from our alumni community of over 200,000 alumni living worldwide. While we love to hear from you, we thought we’d put together a list of answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. Before getting in touch, please check to see if your question has already been answered.
If you have read through our FAQs and could not find an answer to your question then please contact us at alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk. A member of the alumni team will get back to you as soon as possible. Please be aware that during busy times, such as around graduations in January and July, there will be a delay in one of our team responding.
Staying connected
How do I become a member of the alumni community?
You automatically become a member of the alumni community immediately upon graduating, whether you attend your graduation ceremony or not. As a member of the alumni community, you are entitled to several exclusive benefits.
How do I sign up to receive communications from the alumni team?
At the point of registering for your graduation, you were asked if you wished to stay in touch with the University, and, if so, which communication method your preferred: post, phone and email.
You can update and change your contact details and preferences by completing our stay in touch form.
If you wish to opt-out of alumni communications altogether, you can also do this via the form.
How do I update you that a Leicester graduate has passed away?
If you are the family or friend of a Leicester graduate who has passed away, we would appreciate it if you let us know. This allows us to update our alumni database, cease alumni communications to that graduate and offer our condolences. We can include an obituary for Leicester graduates on our tributes and obituaries page on request. If you would like to request this please get in touch with us at alumni.relations@leicester.ac.uk.
How can I confirm my status as a Leicester graduate?
The alumni team can provide a simple email confirmation that you did graduate from the University of Leicester. In order for us to do this please contact us with the following information:
- Your current full name
- Your full name at the time of your graduation (if different)
- Your date of birth
- Your subject of study e.g. History BA, Medicine MBChB
- Your graduation year
If you require a more formal confirmation to share with a third party, such as a prospective employer, please instead contact the Student Services Team via their Employer Reference Request form. You should also contact the Student Services Team if you require a replacement certificate or an academic transcript.
Please note that the University cannot provide an apostille for documents such as your University graduation certificate or academic transcript.
Can you provide a replacement copy of my dissertation or student assignment?
The alumni team do not hold copies of any student assignments, dissertations or theses. We recommend checking with your academic department if they hold a copy of your assignment, but ordinarily student assignments, including dissertations, are kept for no longer than 12 months after submission.
Copies of PhD theses completed by University of Leicester students can be found in the Leicester Research Archive. If you need assistance in finding your thesis please contact the Library.
How can I update the alumni team on what I am doing now?
We love to hear from our alumni from around the world and how they are serving as Citizens of Change. You can update us on your recent accomplishments by submitting an alumni profile.
Alternatively, if you have a good news story of a recent accomplishment, exciting project you are involved with or a personal update you wish to share with us (and/or the alumni community), please let us know by email.
I want to set up an Alumni Chapter - how do I do this?
The University of Leicester is always looking for ways to maintain a strong connection with our graduates across the globe. One way of doing this is through Alumni Chapters. Find out more about how to apply to run a Chapter.

How can I show off the fact I am a Leicester graduate?
In recent years, we have offered graduates an exclusive University of Leicester Alumni label pin. If you are attending your graduation ceremony in July 2022, you will find your exclusive pin on your seat in De Montfort Hall. After the current series of graduation ceremonies have taken place, we will open up requests from all of our alumni to be sent an alumni pin badge - please watch this space for more information.
The University online store offers a range of clothing, gifts and other mementos of your time at Leicester.
How do I join the University gym with an alumni membership?
The University has two gyms; the Danielle Brown Sports Centre on campus, and the Roger Bettles Sports Centre in Oadby. Both offer a discounted membership for alumni, prices for which can be found on the Sport and Active Life website.
To join either gym with an alumni membership, please contact us to request confirmation of your alumni status and provide the following information:
- Your current full name
- Your full name at the time of your graduation (if different)
- Your date of birth
- Your subject of study e.g. History BA, Medicine MBChB
- Your graduation year
How do I join the University Library with an alumni membership?
Memberships of the David Wilson Library on campus are handled exclusively by Library staff, so please contact them directly with your request to join. Please be aware that while alumni members have the ability to visit and borrow items from the Library, you will only have access to a very limited range of digital resources.
Can I retain my student email address after I graduate?
No, unfortunately @leicester.ac.uk or @le.ac.uk email addresses are reserved for current students, staff and honorary staff, so you will not be permitted to keep your old student email address after you graduate. Furthermore, your student email address will be deleted around 1 month after your graduate, so you should make sure to save elsewhere any important emails or attachments that you don't want to lose. We won't be able to retrieve any emails or attachments once your email account is closed.
How can I reconnect with my fellow alumni?
The alumni team organise several events throughout the year which provide the opportunity to reconnect with old friends or make a few new ones. Read more about our programme of events.
We also offer an alumni contact service, by which we can contact one Leicester graduate on behalf of another, with the intention of reconnect friends who have lost contact with one another since graduation. Read more about how the alumni contact service works.
What happened to Leicester Connect?
It unfortunately became impossible for us to continue to offer Leicester Connect, a bespoke platform for Leicester alumni, so we with regret chose to discontinue the platform. We do still encourage Leicester graduates to connect with one another on our social media platforms:
Graduation
Where do I find details about my graduation ceremony?
You will have been sent details about your graduation ceremony to your University student email account. Please check this email account including your junk folder as a first port of call. If you cannot find the information you require, you can check the Graduation pages of the website, including their own FAQs.
If you need to contact the graduations team (graduations@le.ac.uk), please include your full name and student ID number. Please be aware there may be a delay in them responding during busy periods prior to January or July graduations.
I previously graduated from University of Leicester. Do you have a recording of my graduation ceremony?
Recordings of all graduation ceremonies since 1999 were recorded and can be viewed on the University's YouTube channel. Please give two weeks from the date of ceremony for July 2022 ceremonies to be added to the YouTube channel.
What University merchandise can I get to mark my graduation?
The University online store offers a range of clothing, gifts and other mementos of your time at the University of Leicester.
If your graduation ceremony is upcoming, do look out for the alumni team around campus and on our alumni stand on your graduation day. We love speaking with graduating students (soon to be alumni) and we often have a few free goodies to share!
Transcripts and certificates
When will I receive a copy of my transcript?
Graduates will receive their free academic transcript at the end of their graduation ceremony. If you are unable to attend the ceremony the transcript will be posted in the weeks after the ceremony to the address provided during graduation registration.
When will I receive my graduation degree certificate?
Graduates receive their degree certificates at the end of their graduation ceremony. If unable to attend a graduation ceremony the certificate will be posted in the weeks after the ceremony to the address provided during graduation registration.
Posted certificates are sent via Royal Mail recorded delivery or International signed for delivery. A tracking number is provided once certificates have been posted. A replacement certificate cannot be issued if undeliverable at the address provided until the originals are returned to the University.
Please contact graduation@le.ac.uk if there is an error on your certificate or you have not received an expected certificate.
Where can I get a replacement copy of my degree certificate?
Degree certificates are only replaced where the original has been lost or destroyed. Former students are only able to have one official certificate per award. Producing a replacement certificate will invalidate the original document.

If you still have your degree certificate we can produce you a certified copy of your certificate.
I have not received my degree certificate, what should I do next?
If you have not received a copy of your degree certificate, please contact graduation@le.ac.uk.
