Welcome events

We like to help new students settle in to life here at Leicester and we have some events this January to help you settle in, meet new people and find your way around campus. 

  • You do not have to book for the events, simply turn up
  • Check locations on the campus map
  • Don’t forget to pick up your January events guide from the Welcome Team or Welcome and Information Point on Centenary Square to see what’s on 
  • Use our online maps to check locations

Welcome and Information Point

Our friendly Welcome Team are on hand should you have any questions about starting here at Leicester, returning or finding your way around. They will be easy to spot wearing red tops. You can also collect your January Events Guide to find out more about what’s on for this month. Look out for our gazebo on Centenary Square between 10.00am and 4.00pm on the following days:

Living in the UK workshop

1.00pm-2.00pm, Garendon Room, 1st floor, Charles Wilson Building
New to living in the UK? Find out all you need to know about UK culture and what it’s like living here. 

Postgraduate Tea

5.15pm-7.00pm, Chaplaincy 
If you’re a new Postgraduate student, this is a great opportunity for you to meet current Postgraduate students and hear about their experiences in a relaxed way with tea and refreshments. 

Tuesday 22 January

Give it a go!

10.00am–2.00pm, Marquee on Centenary Square
Discover the wide range of sporting and physical activity opportunities available to you. Organised by our Sport & Active Life team, this is an opportunity to find out how you can get involved in something new this year, whether that’s physically taking part or just becoming a fan.

International Tea

5.30pm-7.00pm, Chaplaincy
Open to all international students, come and have a tea with other students from around the world. This event is organised by the Christian Union, but all faiths or those with no faith are more than welcome to come. 

Wednesday 23 January

Welcome to the Chaplaincy: Quirky English

1.00pm–2.00pm, Chaplaincy
Open to all students, have pizza and take part in interesting discussions about different topics around British culture. This lunch will focus on quirky English sayings. 

Thursday 24 January

Table Talk Lunch

12.30pm-1.30pm, Chaplaincy
Drop in to share a simple lunch and conversation. Talk, laugh, discuss the meaningful things in life - and make new friends at the same time. Everyone welcome!

Global Café

5.00pm-7.00pm, Graduate Lounge, 1st floor Charles Wilson Building
Travel the world without leaving campus. Make friends, celebrate different cultures, and improve your language skills, whilst enjoying free drinks and snacks. They’re every fortnight, in the Charles Wilson Building, with different themed activities.

Friday 25 January

Feel Good Friday

10.00am–4.00pm, Marquee on Centenary Square
Brighten up your Friday with feel good activities and fun. If you’re in the first 3000 students to visit the marquee, you’ll receive a mystery gift – which include hoodies, tote bags and travel mugs.

1.00pm-2.00pm, leaving from the Marquee on Centenary Square
Get to know your campus with our Welcome Team who will walk you around, pointing out all the key places you need to know.

Team Leicester Sports Fair

10.00am–2.00pm, Marquee on Centenary Square
It’s never too late to join the largest sporting community at the University of Leicester. Meet some of the students who play for more than 30 Team Leicester clubs, and find out how you can join them.

Wednesday 30 January

Health and Wellbeing Fair

11.00am-3.00pm, Marquee on Centenary Square
Nothing is more important than your health and looking after yourself. Get ideas on how to look after your physical and mental health through fun activities and workshops. 

Activities to try, in the Marquee:

  • 12.00pm – 12.30pm: Boxercise
  • 1.00pm–1.30pm: Zumba

There will also be talks on these topics, in the Garendon Room on the fourth floor of the Charles Wilson Building:

  • 12.30pm–1.00pm: Why do we need sleep?
  • 1.30pm–2.00pm: Balanced eating
  • 2.00pm–3.00pm: Design your future

1.00pm–2.00pm, Chaplaincy
Open to all students, have pizza and take part in interesting discussions about different topics around British culture. This lunch will focus on finding out more about living in Leicester. 

Thursday 31 January

Langar on Campus

10.00am–4.00pm, in the Marquee on Centenary Square
Join the Sikh Society for delicious vegetarian food, bringing the traditional Langar, usually held in Sikh temples, to campus. All students are welcome!
