Registering with the University

Registration is important. It is also quick and easy.

You will have received an email on 8 August, if you are a postgraduate, or 22 August, if you are an undergraduate, with how to do this. You should complete online registration and upload your photo as soon as possible after you receive the email invitation to register, and at the latest by midnight on 9 September.

As part of the registration process, you will need to send us a photo for your student ID card. Please check the photo guidelines to make sure you send us the right sort of photo.

Once you are registered we can prepare your student card so it's ready for you to pick up at the start of term. Your card gives you access to everything you need, including your student finance, accessing lectures and the library, and your meal plan.

Student emergency contact details

Through online registration we ask you to provide the name and contact details for one person you would like us to contact in the event of an emergency. You can nominate the person of your choice to be your emergency contact, provided that the person nominated is over the age of 18. For many students this is likely to be a parent or guardian, but could also be a sister, brother, spouse, partner, or another relative, or friend.

If you are under 18, we collect emergency contact details for you from your parent or guardian prior to you registering for your course, in line with the University’s Under 18s Policy.

We will only use your emergency contact details in accordance with the University’s policies and relevant UK data protection legislation.

Making contact

We will only contact your emergency contact in two distinct types of circumstance:

  • In extreme circumstances in your vital interests without requiring consent, where we have justifiable concerns for your life 
  • In other situations where there are serious concerns about your health, safety or wellbeing and where it may be in your best interests to do so, only if you have consented to this. We ask for your consent through online registration, and you can also review and update your consent at any time by logging into MyStudentRecord. We will not inform your emergency contact in relation to every concern raised about you, but only after due consideration of the nature of the concern and the severity of the situation.
