Minor in Gender Studies
UCAS code: Your UCAS code will be the code of your Major.
Available for students starting in September 2018.
If you choose a Minor in Gender Studies you will study one of the key areas for sociological investigation throughout the last century. It seems impossible to believe that in a civilised and industrially developed democracy such as ours, we still find ourselves part of a society that favours men and most things masculine, and that sees women as ‘different’ or ‘inferior’. This minor pathway provides you with an opportunity to study how and why this is still the case.
In your first year you will study how society perpetuates and promotes power and privilege, and how a patriarchal system uses gender privilege to maintain this inequality. You will also have the chance to investigate how consumer society plays a huge part in determining gender identity and body image for example.
In your second year you will study the topic of gender in a much more specific context. You will examine how the term 'gender' is defined, and how this is different from 'sex'. You will also investigate social movements, and here you will focus on how women have worked to improve their position in society.
In your final year you will study two very different aspects of gender in society; you will examine how the education system in the UK perpetuates gender differences, and conversely, whether it is working to change attitudes and opinions. You will also look at a very different, but very contemporary topic of the global sex trade. This will include challenging your own preconceptions of sex, prostitution, people trafficking, sex tourism and migration through the global sex trade.
Modules shown represent choices available to current students. The range of modules available and the content of any individual module may change in future years.
There are no specific entry requirements for this minor.
