Minor in Film Studies

If you choose a Minor in Film Studies you will study a wide range of films from different periods and countries, including work by key directors including Alfred Hitchcock, Jean Renoir and Steven Spielberg. You will also develop an appreciation of different film cultures and film-making traditions including Hollywood, European and world cinemas.
In your first year you will learn how to ‘read’ film texts from a range of critical perspectives including formalism, authorship and genre. You will focus particularly on American cinema (‘Hollywood’), which is culturally and economically the most dominant mode of film practice in the world.

- American Film and Visual Culture
You will build on the first year American Film and Visual Culture module, studying more recent Hollywood films and film-making. You will also extend your historical knowledge and understanding of film by looking at different examples of world cinema.
- Researching World Cinemas
- Documentary Film and Television
You will be able to choose from specialised modules in which you will explore in depth aspects of cinema and television.

- Stardom and Identities in Chinese and American Cinemas
Plus choose 1 option module from:

No specific entry requirements
There will be a range of assessment methods including coursework essays, exams, presentations and reviews.
Now choose your Major
On a Major/Minor degree you study a core area in depth (your major subject), while also exploring an additional area (in this case Film Studies).
Please note that you cannot study a Minor in Film Studies with a Major in Film Studies.
