University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) NHS Group

Part-time PhD Scholarships now available.

UHN are pleased to announce funding for part-time PhDs (UHN PhD Scholarship). This supports our academic strategy to grow our research active workforce and to support research that is relevant to our patients.

UHN will fund two PhDs across our hospital group per year. Funding is available of up to £20,000 per year. This will:

  • Fund PhD fees
  • Contribute to buy out time to support your PhD studies

We are working with the University of Leicester, our academic partner, to award the UHN PhD scholarships. University of Leicester will manage the application process and, if necessary, support the identification of a PhD supervisor if your application is successful. UHN will fund PhD studentships from any relevant research area, including non-clinical PhD projects, which show consideration for the UHN strategy values.

Applicants are required to have developed a full research proposal which is to be submitted as part of the application.

Funding

Funding

UHN will fund two PhDs across our hospital group per year. Funding is available of up to £20,000 per year. This will:

  • Fund your PhD fees at UK fee rates*
  • Contribute to some buy out time to support your PhD studies

*International employees eligible for part-time study will need to be able to fund the difference in fees for the duration of their studies and hold a visa that permits study alongside their work.

  • UK part-time fee is £2,356 per year for 2023/24
  • International part time fee is £10,925 per year for 2023/24

*International students will need to be able to pay the difference in fees of £8,569 per year.

Applicants should hold  UK upper second class degree or or overseas equivalent or appropriate professional experience consisting of other qualifications, training or experience, subject to approval.

The University of Leicester English language requirements apply.

  • CV
  • Academic qualifications. (Certificate and transcript)
  • Personal statement - include in your personal statement that you wish to register for part time study
  • Research proposal
  • In the reference section please enter the contact details of your two referees in the boxes provided or upload letters of reference if already available
  • English language – if applicable
  • Passport – if applicable
  • A named supervisor – if you have one.

In the funding section please state UHN Studentship.

In addition to the University of Leicester online application form, you will need to obtain a declaration of support from your UHN line manager. The form can be obtained by contacting Alex Cheasley (alex.cheasley@nhs.net or +44 (0)7743 558431).

When completed the declaration should be submitted directly to Alex Cheasley.
