Minority Ethnic PhD Graduate Teaching Assistants Scheme (GTA)

Open to UK candidates who self-identify as Minority Ethnic (*see full criteria in the Eligibility section below.)

The University of Leicester’s College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities is committed to enhancing the opportunities for Minority Ethnic applicants in its research postgraduate cohorts, supporting Minority Ethnic students to progress into academia as a career and thereby  increasing the representation of  Minority Ethnic staff within the College, leading to an increase in the ethnic diversity of our workforce.

The College is therefore seeking applications for our Minority Ethnic GTA studentship scheme.

The College has a wide variety of subject areas and disciplines and will consider applications across this broad spectrum including Law; Criminology; Management; Economics; Education; Museum Studies; History; Politics and International Relations; Media Communications; Sociology; Modern Languages; History of Art and Film; English; and Archaeology and Ancient History.

Successful applicants will be engaged as Graduate Teaching Assistants who hold a unique position in the University; they will be both registered students in receipt of a scholarship and employees of the University.  As such they hold two mutually dependent agreements with the University of Leicester and are required to abide by the terms and conditions of both agreements, as well as having the opportunity to enjoy the privileges of each scheme. The 4 GTA studentships will be funded for 4 years after which there will be a competitive process for a Teaching Fellowship position for an initial fixed period of 1 year.  

Grade 7 Teaching Fellowship

There will be a one year Grade 7 Teaching Fellowship position that the successful Minority Ethnic GTA students can apply for in the 4th year of their study. Details of this competitive process will be communicated at the start of the 4th Year. Expected salary would be Grade 7, spine point 31.



Successful applicants will receive:

  • The scholarship element of the GTA is a combined salary and maintenance grant equalling the full UK Research Council (UKRI) rate (currently £17,668 for 2022/3. 2023/4 rates to be confirmed in early 2023)  for 4 years
  • Tuition fees at the Home Fee (UK) rate for 4 years
  • Tailored support and career mentoring/networking opportunities throughout the PhD process.
  • Preparatory career training and support for application to a post-PhD position.

UK Bachelor degree with at least a good second class classification and should hold or expect to hold a Master’s degree by the PhD start date of 25 September 2023 or overseas equivalent qualifications.

Submit your PhD application using the appropriate Apply Button at the bottom off this page and include the following:

  • CV
  • Research Proposal Form* (proposals not on our Research Proposal Form will not be considered.)
  • Personal statement
  • Bachelor Degree Certificates and Transcripts
  • Master's Degree Certificates and Transcripts -if study completed or marks to date
  • 2 Academic References - enter contact details of referees in the text boxes provided or upload letters of reference if already to hand

In the proposal section upload your proposal form and include the names of proposed supervisors and your research proposal title in the section provided.

In the funding section of the application please state CSSAH Minority Ethnic GTA

UK Applicants who have already submitted an application for a self funded PhD place for September 2023 entry in the subject areas above can be considered if they meet the required criteria.  To be considered for the GTA please email

  • Include a new personal statement explaining why you want to be considered for the funding
  • Your full name and Application ID
  • In the subject line of the email enter: CSSAH Minority Ethnic  GTA studentship  
  • Ensure you email before the closing date

We cannot consider applications from students already registered for a PhD.

All fully completed applications will be considered by the GTA panel after the closing date. 

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for online interview and successful candidates will be informed in April 2023



Criteria for consideration for the GTA funding:

Available to UK (Home)* applicants only.

Applicants must meet the standard UK Government criteria for Home fees and have no restrictions on permanent residency.

*To be classed as a home student, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Be a UK National (meeting residency requirements), or
Have Settled status, or
Have Pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements) or
Have Indefinite Leave to Remain or Enter

In recognition of the under-representation of Black students at PGR level a minimum of one scholarship per year will be ring fenced for a Black applicant.
