Available for students starting in September 2016 or September 2017

If you choose a Minor in Media Studies you will study timely topics and phenomena in the broader field of media studies with a combination of core and optional modules in the study areas of film, journalism, international communication and new media/the Internet. The Media Studies minor will complement and add value to any major you select to study..

Year 1

In your first year you will take modules that are designed to enable you to develop an understanding of media concepts, technologies and phenomena. The first year provides the foundation for the second and third year.

Year 2

In your second year you will study modules that build upon and enrich the knowledge that you will have gained in your first. You will study the production and reporting of news, the democratic and political role of the mass media, and learn about the study of work in creative industries.

Year 3

In your final year you will study a module that will unpack the related phenomena of celebrity and media fans. It will use an interdisciplinary framework to understand the production and consumption of celebrity, drawing on theories from communication studies, politics, sociology, psychology and economics. You will also study how information and communication technologies (ICTs) are used to facilitate and promote civic and other forms of activism.
