Choral Scholarships at Leicester Cathedral

Leicester Cathedral offers three Choral Scholarships of £1000 each year.

Who can apply?

  • Undergraduate or postgraduate students.
  • Priority is given to students who sing alto (male or female), tenor or bass, but in the absence of suitable candidates in these voice parts, it may be possible to award a scholarship to a soprano.
  • You should have experience of singing in choirs. Experience of singing in a church or cathedral choir is beneficial but not as important as strong sight-reading ability.

Scholarship details

  • Scholarships are for one year in the first instance and are usually extended for a further two, given a satisfactory report by the Director of Music to the Dean and Chapter and a willingness on the student's part to continue.
  • Potential applicants are encouraged to contact the Director of Music as soon as possible in the process of their application to the University, as it will often be possible to arrange for an audition to coincide with an open day. Unfilled scholarships may be allocated after the start of the academic year.

  • A termly schedule is issued, which may include occasional extra services and concerts. Choral Scholars are expected to attend all practices and services.
  • Where singers live in halls of residence and are not able to stay there during the vacation without incurring extra charges, it may be possible to arrange alternative accommodation for these periods.
  • Leicester Cathedral runs a growing schools' singing programme in Loughborough and Leicester and there may be opportunities for interested students to become involved.
