ATAS certificates are only applicable to certain PhD students. Please check your offer letter to see if this applies to your degree.
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) is an essential part of the UK’s commitment to counter proliferation. The scheme is specifically designed to ensure that those applying for postgraduate study in certain sensitive subjects do not acquire knowledge that could potentially be used in WMD (weapons of mass destruction) programmes.
You can apply for an ATAS certificate up to six months in advance of beginning your course as the certificate has a validity period of six months. If you require an ATAS certificate you will need to apply for this before applying for your visa, allowing at least four weeks (20 working days) in order to obtain it. Visa applications will be automatically refused if you fail to provide a valid ATAS certificate.
Before applying for your ATAS certificate you will need the following:
- An offer letter from the University of Leicester.
- Information about your programme of study/research including the relevant JACS code.
- A brief description of the research you will carry out.
Please do not apply for ATAS clearance until you have received all of the above information.
