This is the Golden Temple, the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism, located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. The Golden Temple is home to countless plaques commemorating those who fought for India Sikh homeland. For many – mostly Sikhs, the visit to the temple is incomplete without ritual bathing in the holy ‘Pool of Nectar’. Amritsar is overflowed by many other war memorials – from the British colonial era to the more recent conflicts and tragedies. I stayed in this city for a month to undertake my research fieldwork on dark tourism which has been defined as travel to places historically associated with death, tragedy or difficult heritage.
