Seeing the Wood and the Trees

Lisa Huddlestone Seeing the Wood and the Trees

Our research uses Normalisation Process Theory to evaluate and refine a complex intervention to increase referral and uptake of self-management education in people with type-2 diabetes.  Using this theory, our attention is focussed on what people and organisations do – rather than what they intend to do, as well as the fit of the intervention with the wider context.  The image illustrates that it is possible to view both the wood and the trees, and in doing so leads to an increased understanding of the dynamic implementation process.
