Finding Hope in a Hopeless Place
Kate Gooch (Leicester Law School) and Georgina Barkham-Perry (Criminology at Leicester)
Our research focuses on the extent to which rehabilitation and drug recovery is possible within the prison environment. The inherent juxtaposition in seeking to develop rehabilitative approaches in a punitive environment is best captured for us in this image, which contrasts the cold, hard, austere and security-driven architecture with the colour, softness and new life planted and emerging from the ground. The image – taken as part of our research - illustrates that it is possible to find hope in a hopeless place, for new life to flourish, and for people to find some good even in the worst of circumstances.
