Return to Winston Parva: Sex and Violence at the 'Regal'
John Goodwin - Sociology at Leicester
We rarely revisit scenes from earlier sociological research. Yet contrasting the ‘then’ and the ‘now’ to understand social change is central to all sociological practice. Returning to Winston Parva we find the ‘Regal’ cinema remains. Central to The Established & The Outsiders as a rallying point for 1950s ‘lustful’ youth and violent gangs. Where ‘the program concentrated on the lowest common denominator of the potential customers…[a] blend of nightmares and sex phantasies’ (1965: 111). Fights broke out between gangs who quarrelled on the ‘monkey walk’ as the frustrations of adolescence spilled over. Has anything really changed nearly sixty years on?
