Unity in Diversity

The colour-changing fountain located in front of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers never fails to remind me of the Malaysian scenario. Some scholars stress on the importance of commonality (e.g. identity, language, culture etc.) in building a successful nation. For a multiracial country like Malaysia however, it is completely a different story. The unity is encouraged through integration, not via assimilation, despite being dominated by many contradictions. Just like the colours of the fountain. They are multicolours but raising and synchronising in harmony. That said, my PhD explores how government engages its racially diverse citizen in the nation-building process.
