Laying Ghosts to Rest
This is Shrewsbury prison, one of three decommissioned sites in my research which investigates UK prisons as sites of dark tourism. Conducting interviews with tourists, quite by chance I found myself talking to two former prisoners, who had each served part of their sentence at Shrewsbury. After the interview, one was keen to find his former cell situated midway along this landing and he invited me along. Although fifteen years since his incarceration, he explained the importance of his visit in ‘laying ghosts to rest’ and that now, he could finally let go, and move on.
