Perceptions and Realities: Building Community Resilience Against Extremism
I spotted this street art in Birmingham while researching how grassroots communities build resilience against extremist threats. Without doubt, its vibrancy stood out on an otherwise overcast day. Most interesting however was how the art could be seen to reflect the conversations I had just had about how Birmingham and its Muslim communities are perceived to be a ‘problem’. It struck me just how easy it might be for others to perceive the art differently and draw quite different conclusions despite the fact it brightened the area, conveyed a positive message and reflected the culture of those living nearby.
