Inside the Dish
Professor Andrew Blain - Department of Physics and Astronomy
Looking west from inside the 60-year-old Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, as it points vertically upwards, just at the right time for the sun to be rising high enough to light up its centre on a clear morning in October 2017. The sharp shadows are of the photographer on the left and of the steel lattice tower that holds the radio detectors at the focus of the 76-metre-wide telescope. The soft-edged shadow at the bottom is from the edge of the dish.
