Advanced Study 2: Biological Sciences/Chemistry/Physics

Module code: NS2060

Module co-ordinator: Dr Sarah Gretton

In this module, you will undertake guided research from a set list of topics in a selected discipline field: Biological Science, Chemistry or Physics. The module structure will reflect the interaction between a PhD student and supervisor; independent research supported by regular supervision sessions towards the production of a portfolio.

This module will give you the opportunity to both broaden and deepen your specific scientific knowledge, to either develop a discipline specialism or augment your interdisciplinary specialisation, and to gain advanced research skills and expertise in independent learning. Previous research subjects include:

  • Virology
  • Microbiology
  • Relativity
  • Black Holes
  • Molecular spectroscopy
  • Stellar structur

Topics covered

  • Independent research/study skills
  • Critical analysis of a variety of written sources
  • Synthesising information from a variety of sources
  • Depth of knowledge in a discipline specialism

Learning

  • Meetings with a supervisor
  • Independent study
  • 4 two-hour workshops

Assessment

  • Portfolio (80%)
  • Engagement mark (meetings with supervisor) (20%)
