The Cultural Industries: Theory, Policy and Practice

In this module you will examine the role of the cultural, media and creative industries in contemporary UK and international contexts. We will trace the historical development and genealogy of the idea of 'cultural industry' from its Frankfurt School origins through to its purposeful re-evaluation as the 'cultural industries' of late-modern economies. In doing so, we will explore the changing politics and economics of the organised production of media, music, fashion and television. We will investigate more recent transformations which have seen the cultural industries re-branded and re-imagined as 'creative industries', and absorbed into the broader logic of the 'creative economy'. We will also look at the politics of management, work and labour.
