Module Outline

This module introduces the firm; equity; issuing shares; costs of issue; rights issues etc; debt; warrants; convertibles; leasing and quasi-debt; valuation of a company; mergers; growth and failure and disinvestment.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Analyse the determinants of firm value and equity value
  • Calculate cost of capital (equity, debt, etc.) 
  • Identify the existing and potential mix of debt and equity used by the firm 
  • Discuss the theoretical and empirical debates on capital structure 
  • Explore how firms move towards an optimal debt ratio and how to choose the right financing vehicles 
  • Discuss the theoretical and empirical debates on dividend policy
