Conference Interpreting 1
Module code: ML3001
Module co-ordinator: Dr Claire Yi-Yi Shih
Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this module, students should be able to:
- Perform sight translation on non-specialised topics into and out of English
- Perform simultaneous interpreting on non-specialised topics into and out of English
- Select and employ appropriate linguistic strategies to facilitate the interpreting process
Teaching and Learning Methods
This module will be taught by weekly workshops using the interpreting booths where applicable. Students will fine-tune their sight translation skills and their simultaneous interpreting skills through regular practice in class and they will be encouraged to make use of the many resources available on the internet (political and other talks and discussions) to practise between classes. Students will receive formative feedback on their practice during the workshops from their tutor and from classmates, and they will comment on their classmates' performance.
Students' achievements on this module will be assessed by two sight translation tasks (one into and one out of English) and two simultaneous translation tasks (one into and one out of English), each lasting no longer than 10 minutes.
