Module Outline

This module is aimed at introducing the main legal and policy issues of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The WTO is a prominent multilateral organisation with mandate to regulate international trade between States. The course will afford students the opportunity to acquire general understanding of the complex legal and institutional framework governing international trade and the legal rules in the WTO Agreements. Issues include institutional structure of the WTO, GATT and GATS, Dispute Settlement, TBT and SPS, and TRIPS. Students will also examine the tensions created by the simultaneous application of politics and law in international trade.

Assessment Methods

Research paper on a topic chosen by the student and agreed with the Module Convenor not exceeding 5,000 words including footnotes.
